چکیده

We present a version of the neoclassical model with an endogenous industry structure. We obtain multiple steady-state equilibria with an arbitrarily small degree of increasing returns to scale. While the most productive …rms operate across all the steady states, in a poverty trap less productive …rms operate as well. This results in lower average …rm productivity and total factor productivity. A calibrated version of our model displays sizable di¤erences in TFP and output across steady state equilibria. Poverty Traps and Development: The Equity-Efficiency Trade-Off Revisited

The paper discusses some core reasons why poverty remains widespread in many developing countries: market failures combine with asset inequalities to result in poverty persistence, and often poverty traps from which the poor may not be able to emerge, even in a context of aggregate economic growth. As examples the paper discusses some theoretical implications and empirical evidence for three co...

Escaping the poverty trap: modeling the interplay between economic growth and the ecology of infectious disease

The dynamics of economies and infectious disease are inexorably linked: economic wellbeing influences health (sanitation, nutrition, treatment capacity, etc.) and health influences economic well-being (labor productivity lost to sickness and disease). Often societies are locked into “poverty traps” of poor health and poor economy. Here, using a simplified coupled diseaseeconomic model with endo...

Fractal Poverty Traps

This paper offers an informal theory of fractal poverty traps that lead to chronic poverty at multiple scales of socio-spatial aggregation. Poverty traps result from nonlinear processes at individual, household, community, national and international scales that cause the coexistence of high and low equilibrium levels of productivity and income and high and low rates of economic growth. Multiple...

Optimal Government Spending and Taxation in Three-Sector Endogenous Growth Model-Case Iran

The recent literature on taxation and growth has stressed the optimality of a zero long-run taxation on all accumulative factors of production. For a given path of government spending, the optimal tax plan requires the government to build up a positive stock of public wealth in the short run in the long-run, government spending can be financed with the income accruing from the management of the...

Beyond Rosenstein-Rodan: The Modern Theory of Underdevelopment Traps

The theme of this article is the importance – and the many causes – of lowlevel equilibrium “traps.” Rosenstein-Rodan pointed out that spillovers may cause the return to an activity to increase with the number of others who undertake that activity. If spillovers are strong enough, both lowand high-level equilibria are possible, with no tendency of market forces to lead from the worse to the bet...
